Title/occupation: king of Scots

Title type
king of Scots
From Source
1/4/44 (Chrs. David I, no. 93)
Firm date
1140 X June 1141
Probable date
perhaps Nov/1140
Dating Notes
Shortly before foundation of St Andrews Priory (about the same time as H1-4-37 to H1-4-41; probably shortly before H1-4-44. See A.A.M. Duncan. 'The Foundation of St Andrews Cathedral Priory, 1140', 13-15. November date suggested by Duncan's argument that the first Linlothgow charter, which makes no mention of canons, was made while stopping at Kinross on the way to St Andrews. Duncan suggests that the priory was established on St Andrews Day, 1140, one month after the establishment of Newbattle Abbey; the second Linlithgow charter (H1-4-44), which does mention canons, would have been written soon after that.
