Common single-sided seal of Inchaffray Abbey, thirteenth century. The seal depicts an eagle *reguardant*, symbolising the abbey’s patron Saint John the Evangelist. The inscription on the seal’s inner band reads IN PRINCIPIO . ERAT . VERBVM (“In the beginning was the word”).
