Alexander Stewart of Dundonald (d.1282)

Biography
Also known as Alexander of Dundonald, Alexander was the eldest son of Walter, son of Alan, the third steward of Scotland (d.1241) and succeeded his father in that office following the latter's death. During his time as steward, the family probably acquired the lordship of Cowal, to add to their already extensive lands in Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, Berwickshire, Roxburghshire, Haddingtonshire, Kyle and Bute. His eldest son was James (d.1309) and became the fifth steward of Scotland after the death of his father. From Alexander's younger son, Sir John Stewart of Jedburgh, are descended the Stewarts of Bonkle. Alexander also had a younger brother, Walter Stewart, earl of Menteith (d.c.1293). The first recorded use of 'steward' as a surname appears with Walter Stewart. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/49411
