William II, king of England (d.1100)
- Biography
- William, known as William Rufus, was born about 1060 to William, duke of Normandy and future William I of England (d.1087), and his wife, Matilda of Flanders (d.1083). He was brother of Robert Curthose, duke of Normandy (d.1134); Richard (d.1069×75); William Rufus, future king (d.1100); Henry, future king (d.1135); Adelida (d.a.1113); Cecilia; Matilda; Constance; and Adela, countess of Blois (d.1137). There may have been another sister, Agatha. William Rufus might have been intended for the church, receiving his education from Lanfranc, abbot of Caen, though the death of his second eldest brother would change this. William was crowned king on 26 September in Westminster Abbey, two weeks after his father?s death in Normandy. On 2 August 1100, he was killed in a hunting accident and was buried two days later at Winchester. His brother, Henry, succeeded to the throne and was crowned on 5 August.
