Hugh de Eure, lord of Kettins

Biography
Hugh was the son of Ada de Balliol and John fitzRobert of Warkworth (d.1240). He had brothers, Roger, Robert and Stephen (de Balliol), rector of Mitford. The surname is taken from the manor of Iver (Eure) in Buckinghamshire, although 'de Eure' is the more recognisable form. Hugh acquired the manor of Kirkley (Ponteland parish) in 1267. (Hedley, Northumberland Families, 161) It is interesting that he holds Kettins because we see Queen Ermengarde with rights over Kettins in the early 13th c. See Barrow, Anglo-Norman Era, p. 11.
