Biography
Duncan was the posthumous son of Duncan (III) earl of Fife killed in early September 1289. His mother was Joan, daughter of Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester (d. 1295). He was raised in England but returned to Scotland before August 1315 when he concluded a complicated agreement with Robert I about succession to his earldom. Fought at the battle of Dupplin in August 1332 for Robert’s son David II but was captured by Balliol forces shortly after the encounter, transferred allegiance to Edward Balliol, and played the traditional role of the earl of Fife in Edward’s inauguration as king in September 1332. In 1341 Earl Duncan abandoned Balliol and returned to Bruce service. On 17 October 1346 he was captured by English forces at the battle of Neville’s Cross. Was tried for treason by the English king Edward III and condemned to death, but subsequently pardoned and then ransomed in 1350 when he returned to Scotland. He died in 1353.Duncan was contracted in matrimony in 1307 to Mary de Monthermer, daughter of the earl of Gloucester. She joined him in Scotland in 1320 and the couple had one child, Isabella, countess of Fife. https://doi-org.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/10.1093/ref:odnb/50328
