Hugh Balliol (d.1229)

Biography
Hugh Balliol, lord of Barnard Castle in County Durham, was the eldest son of Eustace de Hélicourt (later de Balliol; d.c.1208). He had at least three brothers, Bernard (d.1212), perhaps a cleric, Ingram (d.1239×44), lord of Urr and Dalton in Galloway and Tours-en-Vimeu in Picardy, and Henry (d.1246), later chamberlain of Scotland. Hugh married Cecilia de Fontaines, daughter of Aleaure, lord of Longpré and his wife, Lorette de St Valery, by whom he had at least six children: John (d.1268) who succeeded him and married Dervorguilla, daughter of Alan, lord of Galloway; Eustace (d.1274) who married Helewise, daughter of Ranulph of Levington; Jocelin; Hugh (d.1292), who lived entirely in France; Bernard; and Ada (d.1251), who married John fitzRobert of Warkworth.
