Oliver Sutton, bishop of Lincoln (d.1299)

Biography
Oliver Sutton was probably the son of Rowland Sutton, a minor royal servant, and Elizabeth of Lexinton, around 1219. The family probably took its name from Sutton-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire. He had four uncles who served the church and crown: Henry (d.1258), Stephen of Lexinton (d.1258), Robert of Lexinton (d.1250) and John of Lexinton (d.1257). He had a brother, Stephen, who also entered the church. Oliver sometimes used the surname Lexinton and as such appears as a canon of Lincoln in 1259. He attended the University of Oxford, where he also taught. He obtained the prebend of Milton Manor (Lincolnshire) after 1270 and in 1275 was elected dean. He was elected bishop of Lincoln on 6 Feb 1280 and was consecrated by Archbishop Pecham (d.1292) on 19 May. He served as a papal-judge delegate at one time. Sutton died on 13 November 1299 at Nettleham and was buried on 21 November in Lincoln Cathedral http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/26801 Handbook of British Chronology, 255
