Marie de Coucy, queen of Scots (d.1284)

Biography
Marie/Mary de Coucy was the eldest daughter of Ingram (III) de Coucy (d.1242), lord of Coucy, Picardy and great-grandson of King Louis VI of France (d.1137), and Ingram's third wife, Marie de Montmirail. She was married to Alexander II, king of Scots - his second wife - at Roxburgh on 15 May 1239. She and Alexander had one child, a son, Alexander, who was born on 4 September 1241 and succeeded to the throne upon his father death in July 1249. Marie was at Dunfermline Abbey on 19 June 1250 for the translation of St Margaret's relics, and went to France in October. She returned for her son's marriage to Margaret, daughter of Henry III of England, at York on 26 December 1251. She probably returned to France, living there until 1268. In early 1257, she married as her second husband, Jean de Brienne, or Jean d'Acre, butler of France (d.1296), whose father had been crowned king of Jerusalem in 1210 and emperor of Constantinople in 1231. The couple visited Scotland briefly afterwards and were appointed members of the regency council established in September 1258. Marie separated from Jean in 1268 and returned to Scotland. She took a pilgrimage to Canterbury in 1276. She died in 1284 overseas, presumably in France. She had two brothers, one being Ingram (IV) de Coucy. K.
