Simon of Gartly

Biography
Sometimes believed to be a member of the family of de Quarrantilly (from Carantilly in Normandy) who came to Scotland with the Soulis family and held land in Lanarkshire, see Stringer, Earl David, 87. However, the spelling of Simon's surname, 'Garentuly', is at variance with the orthography of other known members of that family. Rather, it seems to be the same name as Gartly in Aberdeenshire, whose church was spelled 'Garantulin' in the 13th century. Note also the spelling of the surname of Master Andrea de Garyntuly, who seems to have taken his name from Gartly.
