Archibald Douglas, guardian of Scotland (d. 1333)

Biography
Douglas, born c.1294, was the youngest son of Sir William Douglas, lord of Douglas (d.1298) and his second wife Eleanor de Ferrers. The influence of his older half-brother, Sir James Douglas, may lie behind land grants in Archibald’s favour in the 1320s. After James’ death in 1330 Archibald acted as tutor to his son. Archibald, a militarily active figure, became Guardian of the realm when Andrew Murray was captured by the English in April 1333. In May 1333 Edward III imposed a siege on Berwick. After Douglas’ strategy of diversionary raids on the north of England failed to break the siege Archibald made a direct attempt to relieve the town and was killed in the ensuing battle on Halidon Hill on 19 July 1333. Archibald married Beatrice Lindsay, daughter of Alexander Lindsay of Crawford and had two sons, John and William, the latter would go on to be the first earl of Douglas. https://doi-org.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/10.1093/ref:odnb/7860
