Robert [Stewart] II, king of Scots (d. 1390)

Biography
Robert II (1316–1390), king of Scots, was the son of Walter Stewart, hereditary Steward of Scotland (died 9 April 1326) and Marjory Bruce, daughter of Robert I. Walter and Marjory (died 25 March 1317 x 24 March 1318) were married shortly after 27 April 1315 and Robert is likely to have been born early in 1316. In 1318, following the death of Robert I’s brother Edward on campaign in Ireland, Robert the Stewart was formally acknowledged as his grandfather’s king’s heir designate. However, the birth of a son, the future David II, to Robert I and his second wife in 1324, meant that the immediate prospect of a Stewart king receded. David and his older half-nephew had a fractious relationship, with Stewart’s allegedly self-serving behaviour during David’s periods of exile from the realm (1334-1341, 1346-1357) irritating the king and his supporters. David II, however, failed to produce an heir so that on his death on 22 February 1371 Robert became king at the advanced aged of fifty-five. Robert’s rule after 1371 was noted for the territorial and political advances made by members of the new royal dynasty, particularly the king’s five surviving sons. In 1384 the aging king was the victim of a coup led by his eldest son and heir John, earl of Carrick [the future Robert III] that placed the exercise of royal justice and defence of the realm in Carrick’s hands as royal lieutenant. In 1388 the king's second son, Robert, earl of Fife, instigated a counter coup and replaced Carrick as guardian ostensibly acting in the king’s name. Robert II had, however, effectively retired from public life and he died on 19 April 1390 at Dundonald Castle in Ayrshire. He was succeeded as king by John, earl of Carrick, who took the ‘royal’ title Robert III. Robert II was twice married, first, via a retrospective marriage ceremony of 1349, to Elizabeth Mure, daughter of Adam Mure of Rowallan, The couple had four sons who survived into adulthood, all obtaining comital rank, and five daughters. Robert’s second marriage, contracted in 1355, was to Euphemia Ross, widow of John Randolph, earl of Moray (d.1346), This match produced two sons who, like their elder half-brothers, eventually became earls, and at least two daughters. https://doi-org.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/10.1093/ref:odnb/23713
