Hugh de Moreville (II) (d.1173/74)

Biography
Hugh was the son of Hugh de Moreville and his wife, Beatrice de Beauchamp. He was lord of North Westmorland and held Knaresborough Castle. He has been described as a chamber knight of Henry II before 1170 and appears as a witness to royal charters from 1158. He probably acted as a royal justice in 1170 in Carlisle and Northumberland. He was at the royal court near Bayeux at Christmas 1170 when he, Reginald Fitzurse, William de Tracy and Richard Brito travelled back to Canterbury to assassinate Archbishop Thomas Becket Canterbury, though Hugh did not take part in the actual murder. Hugh was dead by 1174, and probably died by the end of 1173 while on pilgrimage to the Holy Land on the orders of Pope Alexander III. There is no evidence that he married and part of his lands in Westmorland passed to his sister, Maud, at his death, and then to the Vieuxpont family through her marriage to William de Vieuxpont (d. in or before 1203). He should not be confused with Hugh de Moreville, lord of Burgh-by-Sands (d. 1202). http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/19379
