Biography
Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church: John of Toledo was born in England and is sometimes given in sources as John the Englishman and Giovanni da Toledo (Tollet/Toletus/Toleto). He was also called Cardinalis Albus for the colour of his habit. He studied medicine in Toledo and entered the Cistercian order. He was master of theology and doctor of decrees. He was an ordained priest and abbot of l’Epau (Maine); after arriving in Rome on business he was created physician to the pope. He was created cardinal priest of St Laurence’s in Lucina on 28 May 1244. He was the founder of the convent of St Giuliana in Perugia and other monasteries in Rome and Viterbo. John was made cardinal protoprete in 1254 and frequently appears at the curia representing English interests. He was consecrated bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina in 1262, made dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals in 1273 and was vicar of Rome in 1274. He died on 13 July at San Germano.
