Urban IV, pope (d.1264)

Biography
Kelly, Oxford Dictionary of Popes, 194-96: Urban was the son of a French cobbler and was born Jacques Pantaléon at Troyes around 1200. He studied at Paris and around 1245 became canon of Laon and then archdeacon of Liège. He was made legate to Poland, Prussia and Pomerania in 1247. In 1252, he was made bishop of Verdun and in 1255 was made patriarch of Jerusalem by Alexander IV. He was elected pope on 29 August 1261 and died at Perugia on 2 October 1264.
