John le Romeyn, archbishop of York (d.1296)

Biography
John le Romeyn (or John Romanus), was the illegitimate son of John le Romeyn (d.1255/56), an Italian churchman who had settled in England, and was born while his father was a subdean. He was educated at Oxford and Paris, where before 1276 he had become professor of theology. He held the benefice of [Nether] Wallop, Winchester diocese and the church of Bolton-le-Sands, held by his father. John was also incumbent of the benefice of Melling, York diocese, but when he was appointed chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral and prebendary of North Kelsey, he resigned this. He later became precentor of Lincoln and prebendary of Nassington. In 1279, he received the prebend of Warthill in York Minster. John was elected archbishop of York on 29 October 1285 and was consecrated at Rome on 10 February 1286. He returned to England and was enthroned at York on 9 June of that same year. John le Romeyn died at Bishop Burton, near Beverley, on 11 March 1296 and was buried the following day in York Minster. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/24042
