Thomas of Melsonby, prior of Durham (fl.1229-44)

Biography
Watt and Shead, Heads, 30: Thomas was prior of Coldingham and occurs on 15 January 1229. He was elected prior of Durham in March 1234. Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae 1066-1300, ii, 29-32, 32-36: Thomas of Melsonby was the son of the rector of Melsonby and from Yorkshire. He first occurs as prior of Durham on 11 June 1234 and was elected bishop of Durham on 1 June 1237. This was opposed by Henry III, though, and Thomas resigned without consecration on 8 April 1240. He last occurs as prior of Durham on 22 May 1244 and resigned that year.
