Aulay, brother of Earl Máel Domnaig of Lennox

Medieval Name
Amalgaid / Amlaíb
Modern Gaelic Name
Amhlaidh
Biography
progenitor of the MacAulay family. The charters had many odd forms of this name (Amlaib), including Hamelin, Amelec, Aveleth, and even Hafeway. Amlaib had a son named Amlaib junior, who only appears in two charters (3/17/34 and 3/17/35). The knight who appears prominently in the charters of Earl Mael Coluim (I), Donnchad son of Amlaib (i.e., Duncan son of Aulay or Macaulay), was almost certainly the son of one of these two Amlaibs. (MHH) Aulay was son of Earl Alwin II
