Thurstan, archbishop of York (d.1140)

Biography
Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae 1066-1300, i, 43; vi, 1-7: Thurstan was the son of Anger, prebend of Cantlers, and had a brother Audoen, who was also prebend of Cantlers. He was a royal chaplain of Henry I from 1103-14 and canon of London, holding the prebendary of Consumpta-per-Mare. He was nominated to the archbishopric of York on 15 August 1114. He was ordained a deacon in December by William Giffard, bishop of Winchester and enthroned at York by the bishop of Chester. He was further ordained a priest on 6 June 1115. He was consecrated archbishop by the pope on 19 October 1119 at Rheims. On 21 January 1140, he resigned as archbishop to become a Cluniac monk. He died on 5 February 1140. Thurstan was born around 1070, the son of Anger (Anskar), a priest from the Bessin area of Normandy, and his wife, Popelina. He was educated perhaps at Caen or Bayeux. His family moved to England after 1086 where his father received the prebend of Kentish Town. After his father?s death around 1104, Thurstan's brother, Audoin (d. 1139), received that prebend. Audoin later became bishop of Évreux. Thurstan held the churches and chapels of Tickhill Castle, Stoneleigh, Shorne and Cobham. He resigned on 25 January 1140 and died on 6 February. He was buried in the church of St John the Evangelist at Pontefract. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/27411
