Biography
Kelly, Oxford Dictionary of Popes, 13-14: According to Hippolytus, he was the slave of a Christian freedman, Carpophorus. He was set up in a bank but fled, afterwards being returned to work on a treadmill. He was later released, but charged with fighting in a synagogue on the Sabbath and sentenced to the mines of Sardinia. He was released and returned to Rome, where he was sent by Pope Victor to live at Anzio. He was recalled to Rome by Pope Zephyrinus and made deacon and curator of the church’s cemetery on the Appian Way. After Zephyrinus’s death in 217, he was elected pope. He died in 222 in Trastevere and was buried there on the Via Aurelia. His feast day is 14 October.
