Biography
Malcolm (Mael Coluim), fifth earl of Fife, succeeded upon the death of his father, Duncan, in 1204. He is found living from c. 1177. The family held lands in Fife and in the west of Lothian, and Malcolm was also given lands around Culross. Malcolm married Matilda or Maud, daughter of Gilbert, earl of Strathearn, and Matilda/Maud d'Aubigny between 1194 and 1198, a marriage which brought with it lands in Kinross-shire and Glendevon, which lie between Fife and Strathearn. Exactly when and in what circumstances the marriage ended is unknown, but Earl Malcolm later married Margaret (or more properly Marguerite) de Tosny, daughter of Roger IV de Tosny and Constance de Beaumont, herself a sister of King William I's wife, Ermengarde de Beaumont. The queen's niece returned to France after Earl Malcolm's death, and was alive as late as 1247. Earl Malcolm I died childless in 1229, and the earldom of Fife passed to his nephew, Malcolm (II), son of Duncan, a younger son of Earl Duncan (II). He was buried at Culross monastery which he had founded on 23 Feb. 1217. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/50328 Malcolm (I), earl of Fife, died in 1229, before 6 Dec. He probably died after 25 May. Had brothers, Duncan, and David Daniel Power, 'Terra Regis Anglie et terra Normannorum sibi invicem adversantur': les heritages anglo-normands entre 1204 et 1244', pp. 189-231 in P. Bouet and V. Gazeau (eds.), La Normandie et l'Angleterre au Moyen Age (Caen, 2003), at pp. 200-202
