Roger de Pont l'Évêque, archbishop of York (d.1181)

Biography
Roger, born in Normandy, first appears in 1139 or later, as a clerk in the household of Theobald, archbishop of Canterbury (d.1161). He had a nephew, Geoffrey, provost of Beverley (d.1177). Roger was appointed archdeacon of Canterbury in early 1148 by Theobald. He was elected archbishop of York in 1154 and was consecrated on 10 October in Westminster Abbey, after which he quickly went to Rome but returned by 19 December. He attended the councils of Westminster (October 1163), Clarendon (January 1164), and Northampton (October 1164), and in December 1164 he was a member of the royal legation to France and Sens ? where the pope was at the time. He died on either 22 or 26 November 1181 in either Cawood or Sherburn, Yorkshire. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/23961 Ferguson, Medieval Papal Reps., 43-52: Roger was legate in Scotland, appointed by 30 September 1164, but he was suspended from office in September 1170.
