Biography
Ferguson, Medieval Papal Reps., 65-71: John of Salerno was a Benedictine monk at Monte Cassino and was elevated as cardinal priest of St Stephen in Celio Monte in 1190. He had performed legations in Germany and Italy before being appointed papal legate for Scotland. On 3-6 December he held a council at Perth, then travelled via Galloway to Ireland. He returned to Scotland before 10 July 1202, when he was at Lochmaben. He spent more than 50 days at Melrose, and spend Christmas 1202 at Ripon with the archbishop of York. He traveled back to Ireland and finally returned to the curia in 1203.
