Description
Robert, steward of Scotland, lieutenant of the most serene prince, the lord David, by the grace of God illustrious king of Scots: since recently in the full council of the kingdom of Scotland held at Edinburgh, with consent of the prelates, nobles and communities of the said kingdom of Scotland, it was agreed and ordained that the reverend fathers in Christ Lords William, Thomas and Patrick, bishops of St Andrews, Caithness and Brechin, and noblemen Lord Patrick, earl of March, Lord Robert Erskine and Lord William Livingston, knights, and five, four or three of them, should be deputed and assigned as ambassadors and messengers to be sent to Berwick upon Tweed for fulfilling and completing in the same place that which was negotiated and agreed in London between the council of the splendid prince the lord [Edward III] king of England and the ambassadors of the kingdom of Scotland, and also that which shall happen to be negotiated, ordained and agreed at the said Berwick upon Tweed concerning the ransom and freeing of our said lord king David, and on the same occasion, by reason of our royal authority which we discharge in this matter, in our name and of the said council of the abovesaid kingdom of Scotland, we give, grant and commit to the said ambassadors and messengers of the same kingdom, as aforementioned, full commission, faculty and power by the present letters to conclude, fulfil and complete, either concerning the said negotiation had at London, or to be had at Berwick as aforesaid, in all its points and articles, by the means and form which was and shall be agreed between both the councils of the kingdoms, and also for seeking and receiving the agreements, obligations, stipulations, sureties, letters and oaths of the same magnates, ambassadors and deputes of the king of England concerning the fulfilment and observance of all the articles contained in the said treaty; also for concluding and confirming all and singular things which shall be necessary or in any way suitable for the completion of the said treaty; whatever our said messengers and ambassadors, or five, four of three of them, as aforesaid, shall happen to confirm and conclude in the foregoing having approval.
