- Description
- David, king of Scots, has become aware that the merchants of England and of Berwick and Roxburgh who are in the faith of the king of England are buying and taking away from his kingdom wool, leather and other good and merchandise, the custom on which he is owed, and no custom being paid; wishing to provide a remedy to this situation, with the contemplation of his beloved relative George, earl of March, has granted the said earl and his heirs the earls of March at Dunbar that they may have a free burgh and free burgesses living there, with the freedom to buy and to sell wool and skins and other merchandise in all his burghs, with a public market cross, and a market on every Monday, with a scales and a cocket and free port at Belhaven (ELO) with free entry and exit of ships; and the said burgh of Dunbar shall have as its bounds the whole earldom of March; and the burgesses of Haddington may buy and sell within the earldom of March, paying custom to the customar at Dunbar; similarly the burgesses of Dunbar may buy and sell within the bounds of the burgh of Haddington.
