Description
David, king of Scots, notes the indenture and concord for his liberation made at Berwick upon Tweed on 3 Oct. 1357 made by the venerable fathers in Christ, John, archbishop of York, primate of England, Thomas, bishop of Durham, and Gilbert, bishop of Carlisle, and the noble men Henry de Percy, Ralph de Neville, Henry Lescrope and Thomas Musgrave, envoys and deputes of Lord Edward, king of England, on one side; and the reverend fathers in Christ William, bishop of St Andrews, Thomas, bishop of Caithness, and Patrick, bishop of Brechin, chancellor of Scotland, and the beloved and faithful men Patrick, earl of March, Robert Erskine and William of Livingston knights, envoys and deputes of Robert, steward of Scotland, then guardian and lieutenant, and the prelates, nobles, and community of the kingdom of Scotland, on the other part, which the king of England, the prince of Wales, and King David have approved by their letters patent under the great seals, quoted in full here. [Text, in French, of the Treaty of Berwick, agreeing to the ransom of King David for 100,000 marks, to be paid over the following ten years, at either Berwick, Norham, Bamburgh, or London, and that a truce shall be observed, including Edward Balliol and John of the Isles. And the kings of England and Scotland are to ratify and confirm the indenture by letters patent under great seals, to be sent to the Warden of Berwick upon Tweed on Martinmas (11 Nov.).] The king and his council have diligently inspected the above agreement, and with their express consent, the king has confirmed it.
