Notes
NLS, Charter 15531 All of the three witnesses to 1/7/39, dated 15 August at Edinburgh, namely William del Bois, the king's chancellor, Thomas, earl of Atholl, and Robert of London, the king's brother, also attest this charter. Furthermore, William, bishop of St Andrews, did not return from Rome until 1218. The appearance of Robert of London is also commensurate with a post-war context. The appearance of Henry de Balliol and his position in the witness list are highly suggestive of his already having received the position of chamberlain in 1219 (he rarely appears with the title of his office).
