- Description
- Abbot William and convent of Dunfermline for Alan of Swinton; have given one place to have from mill above water of Esk in western part of mill of Withenock, above same watercourse, with easement, common pasture surrounding place for bringing hay for horses there, and placing his mill as surety to mill of Withenock that it will in no occasion be hindered through 'bac flod' (back flood?); Alan shall do homage and fealty to Dunfermline for tenement and shall heed to abbot and his house in perpetuity. When mill of Withenoch will not be able to grind, through lack of water or breaking of dam, all men of Elphinstone who owe mill-service to Alan, along with men of shire of Inveresk (ELO), shall repair all defects and dams. If, on other hand, mill through breaking of stones or certain other means, is not able to flow, not from lack of water, men of mill shall not carry off water to Alan's mill, but that he is free to go there until mill is repaired
