Document 3/21/25 (Neville, Strathearn, no. 6)

Description
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ who is coequal and coeternal with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, Gilbert son of Ferteth, by the indulgence of God, earl of Strathearn, and Matilda, daughter of William d’Aubigny, countess, inspired by divine grace, wishing to exalt the church of God and to implant the cult of the holy religion in their feu and patrimony, and aware of the devotion and concession of their venerable Bishops John of Dunkeld and Jonathan of Dunblane, and their children, knights and thanes, give, grant and surrender Inchaffray (PER), which in Latin is called the Isle of Masses, to their Lord Jesus Christ, and Blessed Mary his mother, and to Saint John the Apostle, free and quit from all exaction, service, custom and secular subjection. The care and administration of the church and all the possessions which divine bounty has conferred or shall confer upon it they entrust to Malise, priest and hermit, with the directive that all who join this community are to be instructed in the Rule of St Augustine. After his death, a new head is to be elected by the brothers, with the assent of the earl. Neither the bishop nor any of the earl’s heirs are to attempt to install any individual into this office contrary to the will of the brothers. The earl and countess hold this place so dear to them that they have chosen for themselves and their successors to be buried there, and have already buried their firstborn son there. Therefore, they give, grant, and have established by the impression of their seal on this present muniment, to God, St Mary, perpetual virgin, and St John the Apostle, guardian of the same, and the aforesaid Malise, and to all serving and to serve God, the following churches and possessions: the church of St Cathan of Aberuthven (PER), the church of St Ethernan of Madderty (PER), the church of St Patrick of Strageath (PER), the church of St Makessoc of Auchterarder (PER), the church of St Bean of Kinkell (PER), the teinds of all their cains and their renders in wheat, meal, malt, grain, cheese, and all foodstuffs which are annually expended in their court, and teinds of all the fish used in their kitchen, and teinds of their hunting, and teinds of all profits coming from their courts, and from other kinds of obventions, and licence to fish in the Pow Burn wherever they like, and to take material from his woods for their buildings, tools and fires, and three acres of that land which is nearest the isle on the north, which they gave at the dedication of the chapel. He wills that Malise and all serving there after him will hold and possess all of this in the peace of God and of the lord king, of themselves and their successors, in pure and perpetual alms, for the welfare of themselves and their children and of all their friends, and for the souls of all their ancestors, and of Gillecrist their firstborn. They firmly prohibit anyone from harassing or injuring that place, on pain of their full forfeiture. And whoever of their friends and sworn men charitably confers any of their resources on the same place, may God grant them good things in the land of the living.
