Document 2/123/4 (Scotia Pontificia, no. 7 )

Description
Pope Calixtus II writes to King Alexander of the Scots, reproving him for his reported disobedience to an earlier letter about the presumption of the bishops in his kingdom and about the matter of Archbishop Thurstan of York. The pope commands that the king should by no means permit these bishops to consecrate each other without the metropolitan’s permission. When opportune, bishops-elect should visit their metropolitan, the archbishop of York, and be consecrated either by him or, if necessity demands, with his permission. The pontiff commands that both the bishops and the king should obey the archbishop as a father and teacher.
