- Pope Celestine III, exempts the abbot and monastery of Lindores, founded by the Noble Man Earl David, brother of King W[illiam] of Scotland, from the jurisdiction of anyone, and takes it into the property of Blessed Peter; the possessions and goods which the abbot and brethren possess canonically and other privileges and goods which they have or may acquire by papal permission, by the liberality of kings or the gifts of the faithful, may remain with them, including the place where the monastery is satiated, from the gift and grant of the earl, and freedom of its court throughout the land and firm peace within the borders of the villa of Lindores (FIF), as contained in the charter with all rights, pertinents, the church of Lindores with lands pertaining to the church and lands in the villa, easements of the island called ‘Redinche’ (Mugdrum Island), for the use of the abbot and brethren, one fishery in the Tay next to the said island, the mill of the villa of Lindores, with its suit and multure, the church of Dundee, one toft in the burgh of Dundee, free and quit of all service and exaction; above the Mounth, Fintray (ABD) by its right marches and with the church of the _villa_; and in Garioch ‘Letgavel’ (ABD) and ‘Malinth’ (ABD); the church of ‘Rothket’ (?ABD), with its chapels of Inverurie (ABD) and Monkeigie (Keithhall, ABD), the churches of Durno (ABD), Premnay (ABD), Radmuriel (Christ’s Kirk on the Green, ABD), Insch (ABD), and Culsalmond (ABD), in the bishopric of Lincoln, the church of Conington, the church of Kennethmont (ABD), with chapels, lands and teinds for their own uses and sustenance, one toft in the burgh of Inverurie, free and quit of all service and exaction’ the teinds of all profits and pleas within and outwith the earl’s land, above the Mounth, which he had from the time of its donation, and the teinds of all profits which they acquired from the king’s profits in all his realm, the teinds of all the earl’s things above the Mounth, from the gift of the king, one full toft each of the burghs of Berwick, Stirling, Crail, Perth, Forfar, Montrose and Aberdeen, from the donation of Robert of London, son of the king, one full toft in the villa of Inverkeithing (FIF). The abbey is exempt from tithes on new lands brought under cultivation by them or at their expense. They are also exempt from tithes on the offspring of their animals. They are permitted to take in whatever clerics or laymen have fled from the secular world and have converted freely, and to retain them without any contradiction. None of the brothers, after making their profession, shall be permitted to depart the cloister without the permission of the abbot; no one may intend to depart without the surety of common letters; he permits the right to celebrate divine office privately and quietly during a general interdict. In the parish churches, he is permitted to elect clerics or priests and present [them] to the bishop; if they are suitable, the bishop may commit cure of souls to them so that they may answer for spiritual and temporal dues. He also allows the use of anointment, holy oil, dedications of the altar or basilica, benedictions of the abbots, ordinations of the clerics or monks, and all other ecclesiastical sacraments if they are catholic and in communion with the apostolic see. No one shall promulgate a sentence of excommunication, suspension or interdict without just cause. No one is permitted to construct a cemetery or oratory within the boundaries of the parishes of the churches, or enclosed wasteland, without the assent of the monastery and canons, saving the privileges of the papacy. Burial, for those who shall decide to be buried in that place, will be unimpeded, except for those excommunicated or under interdict, saving justice to the church where they are buried. Should anyone disturb the monastery or infringe on these privileges, they shall incur the indignation of God and Blessed SS Peter and Paul. Also, for this liberty, Lindores Abbey shall pay yearly to the pontiff and his successors 2 bezants.
