Document 2/129/2 (Haddan and Stubbs, Councils, ii, I, 229-230)

Description
Pope Anastasius IV writes to John, archbishop of Nidaros (Trondheim), following in the footsteps of Pope Eugene, his predecessor, who had sent his legate, Nicholas, bishop of Albano, to amend such things as needed correction in the kingdom of Norway. Eugene had constituted the city of Trondheim as metropolis of the said province, and ordained that the bishoprics of Oslo, Hamar, Bergen, Stavanger, the Orkneys, the Sudreys, the Icelandic Island and Greenland, should be subject to it. Anastasius thus establishes this by apostolic authority, and strengthens it by the present instrument. The bishops shall have recourse to the Roman Pontiff alone for the gift of consecration.
