Document 2/135/4 (Haddan and Stubbs, Councils, ii, I, 269)

Description
Pope Clement III commands all the clergy of the diocese of St Andrews that within fifteen days from the receipt of this letter they should receive their bishop John as their own father and pastor, and not delay in showing him due obedience. They should know that if they have chosen another as bishop, after the deposition by the Roman church of Hugh who was once called their bishop or after his death, while the abovementioned John is still alive, Clement annuls that election. If they presume to conspire against Bishop John, the pontiff wishes them and the entire diocese to be placed under an interdict until, recognising their offence, they return to the obedience of Bishop John.
