Document 2/137/84 (Dunf. Reg., no. 254)

Description
Pope Innocent III writes to the abbot and chapter of Dunfermline noting how the monastery is besieged by both ecclesiastical and secular persons pressing claims for filling vacant churches in Dunfermline’s gift. Vacancies are thus sometimes filled out of fear rather than by choice. The monastery’s finances are reported to have suffered as a result of this, and at times customary hospitality is reduced. Therefore, following the example of his predecessor Urban, he prohibits the abbot and chapter and their successors from granting benefices of Dunfermline’s churches which would diminish the house’s rights. Dunfermline should retain its churches and their benefices forever, and no one should compel the monastery to act contrary to this prohibition.
