Document 2/140/60 (Arb. Lib., no. 226)

Description
Pope Gregory IX writes to the abbot of Arbroath noting his petition that it has happened that some monks and converts of the monastery have fallen into the noose of excommunication for laying violent hands on themselves and others for their own detention, yet others for denying obedience to the abbot and his predecessors or for the offence of conspiracy. Some had entered into that monastery through the crime of simony, of which monks some had received orders and celebrated divine office. Whence, they had appealed to the papacy for mercy and had demanded that it was necessary for them to go to the apostolic see. He thus commits that those who change this shall receive from the abbot the benefice of absolution. He includes a proviso that the perpetrators should make satisfaction for those injuries suffered and if the transgression should be grave or unusual he should sent them to the apostolic see to be absolved. To those who, the benefit of absolution not being obtained, through simplicity and ignorance of the law, received orders and celebrated divine service, the abbot shall be able to dispense with the same as shall seem expedient. If for two years from the suspension of office, they shall be well conducted, the abbot may dispense with them, proceeding against simony according to the statutes of the general council. If the monks of converts had anything of their own, resigned into the hands of the abbot, he may convert that to the uses of the monastery.
