Document 2/139/84 (Mon. Insula Manniae, ii, 67-8)

Description
Pope Honorius III writes to the archbishop of York noting that N[icholas], bishop of Man and the Isles, has beseeched the pope that, whereas he has been compelled to exile himself from his church, the lord of the land and others being opposed to him, the pope might grant him permission to render up his bishopric, reserving to himself the use of his pontificals. But, permission to resign cannot be readily granted, especially where cause be unknown. He therefore commands the archbishop, having carefully examined the circumstances of this cause, to grant to him the required permission, if it should appear expedient so to do.
