Description
Pope Adrian IV writes to Brother Edward, bishop of Aberdeen, taking the church of Aberdeen into his protection; all the possessions and goods which they have or may acquire by papal permission, by the liberality of kings or the gifts of the faithful, may remain with the bishop and his successors, including the church of Aberdeen, the church of St Machar, all the villa of Old Aberdeen, half the water of the North (i.e., the Don), the teinds of the fishery of Cruives (at the mouth of the Don), ‘Pethferlen’ (ABD), ‘Ardinachin’ (ABD), ‘Ardechillin’ (ABD) , Sclattie (ABD), Goval (ABD), ‘Petsproc’ (possibly Grandhome, ABD), Murcar (ABD), ‘Gouyl’ [sic for Tillygreig (ABD)], Kinmundy (ABD), Mameulah (ABD), the church of St Nicholas of Aberdeen, the teinds of the mill of Aberdeen, the teinds of cain of ships which land there, with one net in the south water and all the teinds of fish which are caught there, all the teinds of grain [annone] in the same place, all the teinds of fish which are caught in ponds, the teinds of ‘Baldebyniston’ (Biedlieston, Dyce parish, ABD) in grain and fish, the teinds of Pitfoddals (ABD), all the teinds of the king’s burgh of Aberdeen, the teinds which are between the two waters called Dee and Spey, the villa of Rayne (ABD) with its pertinents, Clatt (ABD) with the church and other pertinents, Tullynessle (ABD) with the church and certain pertinents, the monastery of Clova (ABD), the villa and monastery of Mortlach (BNF) with five churches and lands, the churches of Rayne and Daviot (ABD) with their pertinents, the churches of Auchterless (ABD), Invercruden (ABD), Belhelvie (ABD), Birse (ABD), Drumoak (ABD), Banchory Devenick (ABD), the land of Ellon (ABD) which Master Philip held, the villa of Fetternear (ABD) and its church, the villa which belonged to Christian, the priest, the villa which belonged to Achelidis beside Aberdeen. In addition, Edward may have faculty to institute in the cathedral church either monks or canons, as he wishes. The pope directs that no man is permitted to disturb the church or carry away its possessions; saving the authority of the apostolic see. Should any secular person attempt to go against this, after three warnings if he should not make amends, he may lose his honour and be liable to divine justice, and subject himself to retribution.
