Document 2/143/57 (Theiner, no. 116)

Description
Pope Innocent IV writes to the bishops of St Andrews, Glasgow, and Dunkeld, noting how the canons of the church of Brechin have met together on the vacancy of the see and have unanimously conferred the power to provide a bishop upon three of their number, who had requested that Albin, precentor of Brechin – a man careful, discreet and prudent, and born of unmarried parents – should be appointed. The chapter of the church, on the ground that his merits require it, but also because O[tho], bishop of Porto and papal legate, had thought him worthy of having a dispensation to receive orders and hold benefices, had petitioned to the pope to dispense with the defect of his birth. Although Master Albin was much commended for his life, manners and learning, the pope commands them to make a careful enquiry as to whether the postulation had been canonically made, and if he had the character and learning befitting the government of the church of Brechin, and if so, to consecrate him accordingly.
