Description
Pope Gregory X writes to the bishops of Dunblane and Argyll noting the petition by the dean and chapter of Glasgow that John, of good memory, bishop of Glasgow, had acquired the land of Carmyle, Glasgow diocese, with its rights and pertinents, though his industry from money of the chapter itself; he directed the dean and chapter and church under the same manner that the fruits and profits of the same land were to be converted for the sustenance of four chaplains who had served the church, according to letters patent made with the bishop’s seal and by the concession made by the same dean and chapter. Afterwards, Robert, bishop of Glasgow, successor of John, wishing to inspect those letters, claimed them to be shown to him, which, through the treasurer of Glasgow, he detains and objects to returning them to the dean and chapter, concerning which the said dean and chapter had asked to have recourse to the pope’s audience. He thus commands them to call together who shall be evoked, the said Bishop R[obert], that he may restore the said letters to the dean and chapter. If the witnesses named shall have withdrawn out of favour, hatred or fear, they shall compel them by the same censure, without appeal, to provide testimony of the truth.
