Document 4/32/1 (SEA, i, no. 208)

Description
Richard, bishop of St Andrews, Ailred, abbot of Rievaulx and William, abbot of Melrose, as papal judges-delegate, settle at Berwick the dispute between the churches of Durham and Kelso over the chapel of Earlston (BWK) according to the tenor of letters of Pope Alexander [III], namely, if the prior of Durham could prove possession of the chapel of Earlston for forty years without interruption they should impose silence about the chapel on the monks of Kelso. Possession for forty years was canonically proved in their presence by the oath of twelve priests, one deacon and two laymen. The monks of Kelso were silenced and the judges awarded the chapel to the church of Durham in perpetuity.
