Document 4/8/31 (Newb. Reg., no. 80)

Description
An agreement is formed between the prior and convent of St Andrews and Newbattle Abbey because of the advantage to both monasteries, whereby the abbot and convent [of Newbattle] shall hold the greater and lesser teinds of the lands of Bearford (ELO), Cresswell and Prora (ELO) of the prior and convent [of St Andrews] freely and exempt from all exactions in perpetuity, whether Newbattle Abbey improves the land by their own hands or expenses, or whether the lands or a certain part of them shall be improved by certain clerics or laity, saving the rights of the vicar of the parish church of Haddington, following the ordinance of William Malveisin, late bishop of St Andrews, rendering annually to St Andrews Priory at Haddington 6 marks, that is, 3 marks within eight days of Pentecost and 3 marks within the octaves of Martinmas, under penalty of ½ mark paid towards the fabric of the church of St Andrews (on the seventh day after payment is due). If the monks of Newbattle were holding any land besides that which was obtained at the time the agreement was made in the parish of Haddington, they shall pay the full teinds to the parish church of Haddington.
