John de Gray, for the welfare of himself and of his wife Margaret, has given, granted, and by his present charter established, to Dryburgh Abbey, all that land which was Simon of Smerdale’s in the territory of Thirlestane (BWK), with all its pertinents, in free, pure and perpetual alms, [free] from all secular service and demand.
