Document 3/255/1 (Kel. Lib., no. 36)
- Description
- John of Grantham, son and heir of Emma, daughter and heir of Solomon Hogg, has quitclaimed and granted to Kelso Abbey all right and claim which he had or was able to have in the land which the late Ralph de Burneville formerly held from them in the villa of Berwick (BWK), and he grants that if at any time anyone may move to question the abbey in the land, he will warrant, discharge, and defend them. If it may happen through the failure of warranty, acquittal or defence of the said that the abbot and convent may incur any penalty or loss, they may occupy his land which he has in the villa of Berwick or he is able to have without any contradiction until concerning the promises and the ten marks which for hands the released to them may be satisfied. He subjects himself and his heirs to the jurisdiction of whomever the abbot and convent may choose in order that they may compel him regarding the observation of all the aforesaid promises by whichever means they wish.
