Walter of Ryedale, son of Patrick of Ryedale, has given, granted and made firm by this his present charter to Melrose Abbey, in free, pure and perpetual alms, a certain part of his land in the territory of Lilliesleaf (ROX) with the tofts and crofts which are between the land of Roger of Newbattle and the land which he gave to Alexander of Ashkirk, namely all the land which Matilda Corbet held in dowry in ‘Lintedikes’, ‘Benelandes’ and ‘Burnerig’ in two places and in ‘Kaueres’ and ‘Ch’ngisflat’, and the meadow which is called ‘Stobimedue’ and 5 acres and one parcel of his demesne below ‘Harekamb’ on the southern part, viz. from the land which Alexander son of Thor held from him at ferme. He and his heirs will support and warrant the said land with the said pasture and will acquit them from all terrestrial service, custom, secular exaction and demand [owed] towards the lord king and any others in perpetuity.
