- William Maitland son of Richard Maitland has granted and by this his charter established to Dryburgh Abbey, that land which Henry of Bessingham gave them in the territory of Thirlestane (BWK), with all their pertinents and liberties, namely, all that land with tofts and crofts which Oswin the smith formerly held within the feu of Thirlestane with 20 acres adjacent to it in his demesne of ‘Brigeflaite’ (Bridgeflat), that is, in the western part of the cultivated field next to the land that Robert Smel had, and with the lands called ‘Crukes’ that formerly belonged to Adam ‘Kingslaw’ and with two fields called ‘Langeletht’, and with the increase of all that land called ‘Bromycrok’, which lies on the south side of Henry’s sheepfold, and with a toft and croft on the east of the house of the aforesaid Oswin, with three acres of land in the territory of the same villa, in pure and perpetual alms, free and quit from all service, aid, custom and exaction, in all commons, easements and liberties pertaining to the villa of Thirlestane. The canons and their men on the aforesaid lands may grind their corn at the mill of Thirlestane free of multure and will be ‘rumfre post bladum’ [etc]. And the said canons will have in the demesne pasture of Thirlestane two of their own horses pasturing with William’s own horses. And the canons and their men will have in his woods a reasonable allowance [of timber], under the inspection of his forester.
