Description
Gregory de Maleville, knight, has given and granted and by this his present charter established to Newbattle Abbey, one stone of wax to light the church, in perpetuity, from the rents of his land of ‘Lethbernard’ (Leadburn, MLO), at the sacristal mass [?] on the day of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin at Newbattle (25 March). At his instance, the abbot and convent concede to him and his heirs charitable participation in all goods that will be in the said monastery of Newbattle in perpetuity.

Gregory de Maleville (son of William de Maleville) granted charters to Dunfermline Abbey on 5 July 1251 and 22 Dec. 1255 (_Dunf. Reg._, nos. 160, 203, 206) as well as a charter for a chapel of St Leonard, 1267×71 (_St And. Lib._, 376-7). See also Fraser, _Melvilles_, i, 13-15.
