Description
Herbert of Maxwell has given, granted and made firm by this his present charter to God and the glorious Virgin Mary his mother, 6 marks in annual rent in respect of the produce of his mills in Mearns in Alton, or of the produce of his other mills of Mearns from which the said 6 marks can the better and more quickly be raised, to be taken half at Pentecost and half at the feast of St Martin in winter; to hold and have in pure and perpetual alms, without any secular service, exaction or demand, for the upkeep of a chaplain annually to celebrate mass in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the parish church of Mearns, for the living and the dead.
