Description
Walter, son of Alan, Steward of the King of Scotland, to sir Robert, Master of the Order of Sempringham, and to the whole congregation of the Order, proposing to found at his own expense a house of the Order of Sempringham in Scotland at the New Castle upon Ayr. He sets forth those things he proposes to give and assign for the support of the religious: the wainage of 5 ploughs in the area of the place mentioned; pasture stocked at the outset at his own expense with 300 cows; pasture similarly stocked with 2000 sheep; a convenient fishery; the church of Dundonald, which is worth 100 marks annually; the church of Sanquhar, which is worth 20 marks; two mills worth 12 marks; a certain part of his wood of Sanquhar; and the ecclesiastical and domestic buildings which he shall erect there for the religious. The bearer of this letter, sir Nicholas, prior of Sixhills, will be able to explain its contents more fully and clearly. He requests sir Robert to reply before Easter.
