Description
James, Steward of Scotland, since he has become faithful to, and subject to the will of the most noble prince, his well-beloved lord, the lord Edward, by the grace of God king of England, lord of Ireland, and duke of Aquitaine, promises on his own behalf and that of his heirs, upon punishment of body and property, and whatever else he can forfeit, that he shall support him, and he shall serve him well and loyally against all mortal men, every time he is called upon or summoned by his lord, the king of England, or by his heirs, and that if he come to know of anything harmful to them, he shall do all in his power to obstruct it, and shall make them aware of it. In order to hold to and keep these promises, he pledges himself, his heirs, and all their goods; and he has furthermore sworn this upon the holy Gospels. As proof of this matter he has caused these letters patent to be written, sealed with his seal. Given at Roxburgh, 13 May, in the twenty-fourth year of the reign of his aforesaid lord, the King of England [1296].
