Description
John of Sandale, chamberlain of Scotland, addresses the provosts and baillies of the villa of Roxburgh and states that because it became known to him, through the inspection of the charters, as well as the rolls of Lord Alexander [III], the late king of Scots, that the abbot and convent of Dryburgh are owed to have and receive, every year, for the lighting of the church, twenty shillings from the collection of the fermes of their villa, which the abbot and convent were accustomed to receive from the grant of the predecessors of the kings of his lord, the king of his land of Scotland (i.e. Edward I), in previous times, John mandates the provosts and baillies, on behalf of their lord, the king, to render to the abbot and convent of the said twenty shillings every year, [and] they are to make good on this at the established and customary times, and John will make sure to annually set aside the said annual render into the provosts’ and baillies’ possession.
